Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played many hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.

The real advancement in his game began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena ever. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
