Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved participating in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.
The real improvement in his abilities began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently play against each other. Howard was able to access a few of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
