Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi-low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems difficult initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing array of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
