Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and do not win most times. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
