Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved betting on different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played countless hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The real advancement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
