Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved taking part in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The real improvement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
